Gen Z’s Obsession with Sun Tanning Takes Over New York City: Some are even ‘hooked’ on bronzing, as ‘Nobody wants to be pale’

Gen Z appears to be leading a resurgence in the popularity of using UV tanning beds in Manhattan salons. Many salons are reporting an increase in younger clients, with those born between 1997 and 2013 making up a significant portion of their clientele. These younger clients often incorporate tanning into their beauty routines, with some returning to the salons once a week.

Social media plays a significant role in driving the trend, with influencers on platforms like TikTok promoting the sun-kissed lifestyle. Many are drawn to tanning beds after seeing these glamorous influencers and expressing a desire to be tan as it is associated with beauty and confidence. Some clients like Sam Boyle attribute their improved mood and motivation to their regular tanning bed sessions.

While some clients report improvements in their skin conditions like acne after using tanning beds, dermatologists caution against the potential risks associated with UV exposure. Tanning beds can lead to mutations in the skin that may result in skin cancer, as well as other skin issues like wrinkles and sun spots. Dermatologists recommend safer alternatives like dermatologist-approved light therapy that uses UVB rays and less radiation than tanning beds.

Despite the warnings from dermatologists, some Gen Zers are indifferent to the risks associated with tanning beds, prioritizing the desire to look good now over potential skin damage in the future. A significant number of young individuals believe that being tan is more important than protecting themselves from skin cancer and are willing to take the risk for a tan. Some clients express a preference for tanning beds over the sun, believing it provides them with a dose of vitamin D.

Salon owners and employees report that many clients, particularly in the fashion and beauty industries, are embracing tanning beds as a way to enhance their appearance. The desire to achieve a tan and avoid looking pale appears to be a driving force behind the popularity of tanning beds among younger individuals. Despite the concerns raised by dermatologists and health experts, some clients continue to prioritize aesthetics over potential health risks associated with tanning bed use, indicating that the trend is likely to continue gaining popularity in the future.
