Gen Z Embraces ‘Trashy’ Fashion and Reckless Partying This Summer Inspired by Charli XCX’s Latest Album, ‘Brat’

Gen Z is gearing up for a summer filled with wild and reckless behavior, inspired by the release of Charli XCX’s new album, “Brat.” The album features bass-thumping dance anthems like “Club Classic,” “Guess,” and “Girl, So Confusing,” and has gained millions of streams in the first week of its release. The term “brat summer” has taken off on TikTok, with users embracing a gritty and self-confident persona that is the opposite of last year’s more polished and clean aesthetic.

Many self-proclaimed “brats” on TikTok have embraced the idea of a “brat summer” by embodying characteristics like unwashed hair, late-night clubbing, and spontaneous decisions like getting tattoos. Charli XCX herself described the “brat summer” attitude as “trashy” in a viral video, highlighting a rebellious and carefree spirit. The signature color of “brat summer” is an acid green that matches the album cover, and fashion brands are incorporating this color into their collections to keep up with the trend.

Even tech companies are getting in on the “brat” trend, with Instagram offering a “brat” filter that applies the signature acid green color to images. Stylist Chris Horan revealed that 65 color swatches were considered before landing on the lime green hue for Charli XCX’s album, showing the deliberate choice behind the trend. The viral nature of the “brat” campaign has attracted a wide range of participants, from Duolingo to corporate brands, all eager to be a part of the trend.

The “it” girls of the moment, including Julia Fox and actresses like Chloë Sevigny, Chloe Cherry, Hari Nef, Rachel Sennott, and model Gabriette Bechtel, are featured in Charli XCX’s music video for “360,” further solidifying the cool factor of the “brat” movement. However, the appeal of being a “brat” is not limited to those in the club scene, as the attitude is open to anyone regardless of gender or class. The emphasis on audacious fun, empowered friendships, and a carefree lifestyle is what makes the “brat” trend feel so spontaneous and inclusive.

According to Elle beauty writer Katie Withington, the key to the popularity of the “brat” movement lies in its lack of exclusivity. Unlike trends centered around luxury and wealth, being a “brat” is all about being unfiltered, carefree, and a little messy. This open invitation to embrace a rebellious and fun-loving attitude has resonated with many, making “brat summer” a viral sensation that transcends traditional fashion and beauty norms. The carefree and audacious nature of the “brat” trend allows anyone to participate and connect with others in a meaningful and empowering way.
