Gary Sanchez, currently a backup catcher and part-time DH with the Brewers, reminisced about his time with the Yankees, where he started as a big-time prospect in 2016. Since leaving the Yankees, Sanchez has bounced between five organizations, including the Twins, Giants, Mets, Padres, and currently the Brewers. His closest attempt to rediscovering his prime was with the Padres in 2021, where he hit 19 home runs in 72 games before fracturing his wrist. Sanchez signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Brewers in February 2022, with the opportunity to earn more depending on the condition of his wrist. Despite not playing every day like in his earlier career, Sanchez has made significant contributions to the team and is grateful for the chances he has been given.
Sanchez made an impact in a recent game against his former team, the Yankees, leading off the sixth inning with a double against Luis Gil. Despite his success, Sanchez understands the pressures and anxieties that come with playing in New York and offered valuable advice to young catcher Austin Wells on how to stay focused and trust the plan laid out for him. Sanchez has shown his power at the plate this season, with three of his eight hits going for home runs, including one off former teammate Aroldis Chapman, where he drilled a go-ahead two-run homer on a 102-mph fastball.
