Gary Neville disregards Mohamed Salah while choosing the most essential Liverpool player for Manchester United.

Gary Neville expressed his opinion that Manchester United need to sign a commanding centre-back like Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk to improve their performance. Despite the option of signing Mohamed Salah, Neville believes that Van Dijk would bring a dominating presence and strength to the team that they currently lack. He emphasized the importance of having a strong spine in the team, comparing Van Dijk’s leadership qualities to legendary players like Roy Keane, Vincent Kompany, and John Terry.

Neville elaborated on his preference for Van Dijk over Salah by highlighting the centre-back’s ability to control and impact the entire team, unlike United’s current centre-back, Raphael Varane. He noted that Varane, despite being a talented defender, may not have the capability to lead and manage the backline effectively. Neville emphasized the need for a dominant figure like Van Dijk, who can hold the team together and elevate the performance of other players, including forwards like Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

Manchester United’s struggles in scoring goals this season have been a major concern, with their tally of 40 goals in 29 matches placing them 15th in the Premier League in terms of goals scored. Neville believes that addressing their defensive shortcomings should be a priority, as their defense has conceded 40 goals, making it the fourth best in the league. He suggested that signing a player of Van Dijk’s caliber could bring the necessary stability and solidity to the team, helping them compete at a higher level.

The former Manchester United defender also discussed the potential managerial changes at the club, with Erik ten Hag under pressure and new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe considering options like England boss Gareth Southgate and Wolves’ Gary O’Neil. Neville emphasized the need for a strategic shift in the team’s culture and structure, highlighting the impact a player like Van Dijk could have on reshaping and improving the team. He suggested that United require a dominant figure to lead the team from the back and instill confidence and control among the players.

Neville’s views on United’s need for a commanding centre-back like Van Dijk reflect his belief in the importance of defensive solidity and leadership qualities in a successful team. By overlooking Salah and endorsing the signing of Van Dijk, he emphasized the significance of having a strong foundation at the back to build a competitive team. His analysis of United’s struggles in both attack and defense underlines the critical decisions that need to be made to address the team’s deficiencies and elevate their performance in the Premier League. Ultimately, Neville’s suggestions aim to guide United towards a more successful and competitive future in English football.
