Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher debate Ben White’s surprising omission from the England squad

Ben White decided not to be included in the latest England squad, and Jamie Carragher does not see him as a starter regardless. Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have differing opinions on Ben White’s possible involvement with the England team. White has been one of the most impressive English defenders and has proven his effectiveness as a right-back. Neville believes that White should be a starter for his country, while Carragher is not convinced. They debated this issue on The Overlap, with Neville arguing that White would play as a center-back for England.

During a recent England game against Belgium, Carragher pointed out that the two center-halves were not impressive as England conceded two first-half goals. He mentioned that White does not typically play as a center-back for his club, and that John Stones is more likely to partner with Harry Maguire in the national team. Despite White’s absence from the squad, he continues to perform well for Arsenal and is in contention for the Premier League title. Southgate has expressed a desire to have White back in the squad, stating that the door is open for his return.

White left England’s World Cup squad due to mental health issues and a reported clash with Gareth Southgate’s assistant. However, Southgate has dismissed these speculations and reiterated that White is still welcome in the team. The England manager acknowledged the difficulty of fitting White into the squad ahead of the Euros, with established partnerships like Maguire and Stones. Nevertheless, he remains open to including White, as the situation with player availability can change. Southgate was keen to include White in the squad for the recent camp but respected Arsenal’s decision to contact him directly.

Overall, there is a difference in opinion between Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher regarding Ben White’s role in the England team. While Neville sees White as a potential starter in the center-back position, Carragher believes that White’s usual position at right-back might not fit in the current England setup. Despite this debate, Southgate has left the door open for White’s return to the squad and values the player’s contributions to his club. As the Premier League season progresses, White’s performances for Arsenal will continue to be a factor in his potential selection for the national team.
