Garuda Indonesia’s flight carrying 468 people from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia had to make an emergency landing in Makassar due to an engine fire. The Boeing 747-400 aircraft, flight Garuda-1105, returned safely to its original airport with all passengers unharmed. The decision to return was made by the pilot after witnessing sparks of fire in one of the engines after takeoff. Among the passengers were pilgrims heading to Saudi Arabia for the hajj pilgrimage.
After the emergency landing, all passengers and crew members were directed to accommodations before being put on a replacement flight to Saudi Arabia later on the same day. Footage on social media showed the engine of the plane catching fire during takeoff, although this has not been confirmed by news agencies. The aircraft was then grounded for a safety inspection by the airline’s president director, Irfan Setiaputra. Garuda Indonesia, which is 60% owned by the Indonesian state, has suffered significant financial losses during the COVID-19 pandemic and had to ground a majority of its fleet due to travel restrictions and declining demand.
