Sony Pictures Entertainment’s relaunch of The Garfield Movie starring Chris Pratt as the iconic cat is projected to earn nearly $32 million at the Memorial Day weekend box office. The film, also featuring voices such as Samuel L. Jackson and Ving Rhames, opened in 4,035 theaters domestically and is expected to outperform the previous installments in the franchise.
Despite its strong performance, The Garfield Movie faces stiff competition from the Warner Bros. film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. Both films are estimated to finish in the $31 million to $33 million range for the four-day weekend, with Garfield’s projected earnings falling in the middle of that range. Warner Bros. will not release its official weekend estimates until Monday.
One of the key differences between the two films is their production budgets, with Garfield’s budget reported at $60 million compared to Furiosa’s $168 million. The box office success of these films will ultimately determine the winner of the Memorial Day weekend, with both attracting audiences to theaters over the holiday.
In addition to The Garfield Movie and Furiosa, other films are making their mark at the box office over the holiday weekend. John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds’ movie IF is expected to earn $21 million, while Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is estimated to bring in $17.1 million domestically. The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, is projected to earn $7.6 million, rounding out the top five at the box office.
