From a Fisherman to Newcastle’s No.9: My New Mission in Senegal

Papiss Cisse, who rose from poverty in Senegal to become a notable player for Newcastle United, has always questioned why he was the one to receive such opportunities. Despite not considering himself the best among his friends, he ended up in Europe, scoring important goals for his team. During his time at Newcastle, he bought an ambulance for his hometown and spent much of his holidays giving back to his community. He recently partnered with a charity to help deliver clean water and agricultural projects in Senegal.

His rise to prominence in the Premier League was marked by a remarkable goal against Chelsea 12 years ago, which he describes as his “passport” around the world. Cisse’s hard work, quickness, and lethal finishing ability made him a fan favorite at Newcastle United. Despite not reaching the levels of Newcastle legends like Alan Shearer, he is proud of his time at the club and the impact he made.

Cisse’s close relationship with his teammate Cheick Tiote, who tragically passed away, has had a lasting impact on him. He remembers Tiote as a brother and a close friend, and he continues to cherish the memories they shared. Cisse is determined to honor Tiote’s memory by being a giver and helping those in need, just as Tiote would have wanted.

Currently, Cisse stays connected to football through a Premier League Legends game he plays weekly with former players. This game allows him to relive old memories and enjoy the camaraderie of the sport. Additionally, he remains actively involved in charitable work, partnering with organizations to support projects in Senegal that will benefit the community.

Formerly a cult hero at Newcastle United, Cisse looks back on his time with fondness and pride. He reflects on the impact he made on the club and the fans and appreciates the support he received during his playing career. For Cisse, his experiences in football have shaped him into the person he is today, and he continues to give back to his community and honor the memory of his late teammate Tiote. Through his charitable efforts and commitment to football, Cisse leaves a lasting legacy both on and off the pitch.
