French prosecutors are seeking a two-year prison sentence and ineligibility for Marine Le Pen

In France, the leader of the far-right National Rally, Marine Le Pen, is currently involved in a trial that could have significant consequences for her political career. Along with 24 National Rally officials, Le Pen is accused of embezzling EU parliamentary funds, which has led to intense scrutiny and legal proceedings. The allegations involve the misuse of money intended for European Parliament aides to pay party staff members between 2004 and 2016, violating EU regulations.

Prosecutors in Paris have requested a 2-year prison sentence for Marine Le Pen, along with a 5-year period of ineligibility to run for office. If found guilty, this could impact Le Pen’s ability to participate in the 2027 presidential race. The trial, which has been ongoing for nine weeks, is set to conclude on November 27, with a verdict to be delivered at a later date. Defense lawyers are scheduled to present their arguments in the coming weeks.

Despite the severity of the charges, Le Pen showed no emotion in the courtroom as she listened to the prosecutors’ demands. She has denied the accusations of being part of a system designed to divert EU funds to benefit her party. Le Pen argued that the aides’ roles were adapted to meet the MEPs’ various activities, including some highly political missions related to the party. Her co-defendants, many of whom owe their political or professional careers to her, testified under her watch during the trial.

Prosecutors also requested guilty verdicts for all other co-defendants, with various sentences of up to one year in prison and a 2-million euro fine for the party. The accusations have led to a debate about the evolution of EU regulations and practices over time. Le Pen has insisted that the party had not faced any issues with the Parliament until a 2015 alert was raised about potential fraudulent use of EU funds by members of the National Front. She argued that the rules were either nonexistent or more flexible in the past.

The lawyer for the European Parliament estimated the cost of the suspected embezzlement to be €4.5 million. He stated that in recent weeks, it had become clear that the fraud had been largely established. Despite the political implications and controversies surrounding the case, the court has emphasized the importance of sticking to legal reasoning and focusing on the evidence presented. The trial has showcased the complexities of navigating legal proceedings amidst political tensions and personal interests.
