Santos has also been indicted last year and has pleaded not guilty to 13 charges of fraud and money laundering and not guilty to an additional 10 charges tacked alleging he was part of two schemes that involved the stealing of donors’ and financial information. In December, he was expelled from the House of Representatives after a scathing ethics report that alleged he sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit. Santos was running against incumbent Nick LaLota and Democrats Nancy Goroff and John Avlon. The scandal-plagued New York Republican-turned-independent announced his campaign in early March during the State of the Union. Earlier this year, Santos revealed his independent run after being expelled from the House of Representatives in December, last year. He now withdraws out of the race to avoid splitting the ticket and being “responsible for handing the house to (Democrats).” Santos told New York Spectrum News he hasn’t ruled out a future run for office, saying in a statement that he will “continue to participate in the public policy discussion and will do my part”. He will support local Long Island Republican candidates like Joe Saladino and other offices as well as working with current and upcoming leaders of the Conservative Party.
In a statement given to Fox News, Mr. Santos admitted he wouldn’t be able to raise the necessary funds to win. He said, “although my grassroots campaign did raise a great deal of money, it was not enough to continue to be competitive financially.” He announced his race for the 3rd Congressional District of New York in the new independent state, named “For The People”. In a statement, Santos explained the purpose of his campaign; “to clean up the political corruption in Ed Mangano and Beau McCormack. The goal of the campaign is to ensure transparency, accountability and an end to the long list of ed candidates.”
Santos has promised to continue following the results of the November 6 election. He thanked his campaign manager and son for the support he provided during the 2019 election. He explained that he is willing to work with and assist other voters to clean up Nassau County politics from Democratic corruption and crated “public corruption and cronyism” in the county. Mr. Santos also wants to alert voters that the problem is not limited to the Republican Party or the Democratic Party but the establishment of the entire political system.
