A retired professor with connections to former President Barack Obama and a history of involvement in far-left militant activism spoke at an anti-Israel encampment at the University of Chicago. Bill Ayers, known for co-founding the Weather Underground, a militant organization classified as a Domestic terrorist organization by the FBI, visited the encampment on the Main Quadrangle of the university. Ayers was hunted by the FBI for his alleged involvement in bombings in the 1960s and ’70s and defended these actions when questioned. His relationship with Obama became controversial during Obama’s 2008 campaign, although Obama and media outlets disputed allegations of a close relationship between the two.

The anti-Israel encampment at the University of Chicago was part of a larger wave of protests sweeping across U.S. campuses in recent weeks. Schools have been attempting to crack down on these demonstrations, with reports of law enforcement involvement in clearing encampments at Columbia, Harvard, and Yale. At Columbia, administrators began suspending students who refused to abandon the encampments, leading to a riot inside an academic building used by top university officials. The situation highlights the tensions and conflicts surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that have been escalating on college campuses.
