Former mob boss claims Menendez brothers should be granted a reprieve, after forming bond in prison

Former mobster and mentor Michael Franzese spent 11 months in solitary confinement with Lyle Menendez, one of the Menendez brothers who were serving life in prison for the murder of their parents in 1989. Franzese recounted conversations with the brothers where they detailed abuse they suffered from their father, leading to their deadly actions. He believed the abuse was real and expressed empathy for the brothers, citing the fear they had of speaking out due to their powerful father and lack of intervention from their mother.

The Menendez case has gained renewed attention with the release of two Netflix productions, a documentary and a fictionalized TV series based on true events. Both productions delve into the abuse allegations made by the brothers against their parents, shedding light on the trauma they experienced. Family members of the brothers have been advocating for reduced sentences, pointing to their good behavior in prison and the time they have served. Franzese also supported the idea of a reduced sentence for the brothers, viewing the convictions as more fitting of manslaughter rather than first-degree murder.

Franzese’s proximity to Lyle Menendez in solitary confinement allowed for conversations between the two where the brothers shared some of the alleged abuse they faced from their father. Despite acknowledging the severity of the abuse, Franzese emphasized that it does not justify the murder of their parents. He advocated for a manslaughter charge instead of first-degree murder, believing that their abuse allegations should have been given more weight in the courtroom. The brothers’ conflicted feelings about their actions and their love for their father were highlighted in their interactions with Franzese.

The Menendez brothers’ lawyers have argued for a conviction of manslaughter rather than murder, stating that this would have led to their release from prison already. The release of the documentary “The Menendez Brothers” offered a new perspective on the case, with audio interviews from the brothers themselves detailing the abuse they faced, including allegations of sexual assault by their father. The complexity of the brothers’ feelings towards their father and the events that transpired were explored in the documentary, shedding further light on the case and the motivations behind the brothers’ actions.

Both Lyle and Eric Menendez have been seeking reduced sentences after spending over 30 years in prison, as their family members continue to support them. Franzese’s experiences with Lyle in solitary confinement provided insight into the brothers’ mindset and the trauma they endured. While acknowledging the severity of the abuse, Franzese maintained that it did not justify murder. The renewed attention on the Menendez case has sparked discussions about the appropriate charges and sentences for the brothers, as well as the importance of considering abuse allegations in legal proceedings.
