Ashleigh Merchant, lawyer for Trump co-defendant Michael Roman, testified that Willis received a $780,000 budget increase in September 2021, shortly before Wade was hired and the special grand jury was convened. Willis claimed the funds were to hire additional staff to address a backlog of homicide cases, but denied requests for information on the new hires requested through open records requests. The committee is investigating these budget increases and their allocation to determine if they were used appropriately.
Willis is not expected to testify at the Thursday hearing and has previously criticized the committee as unlawful, though they have subpoena power to compel her testimony. The committee has been met with resistance from Willis, but continues to investigate allegations of misconduct.
