Former doctor convicted of murder could be released on parole in two years after receiving pardon

After serving more than two years past his conditional pardon, former North Carolina doctor and convicted murderer Vince Gilmer may finally be released from prison this week. Gilmer, 61, was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, a rare and incurable disorder that has caused his health to deteriorate significantly. Despite being granted a pardon in January 2022, Gilmer has remained behind bars due to strict conditions attached to the pardon and delays in finding a suitable medical facility to accept him as a long-term patient.

Gilmer, who admitted to killing his father, claimed that his actions were a result of the horrific sexual abuse he suffered as a child. His supporters argue that had he been properly diagnosed with Huntington’s disease at the time of his trial in 2005, the outcome may have been different. With the help of Dr. Benjamin Gilmer, his medical practice successor and legal guardian, efforts have been made to secure a hospital willing to accept Gilmer as a patient in line with the terms of his pardon.

The Virginia Department of Corrections has confirmed that they are working on logistics to establish a release date for Gilmer as soon as possible. Benjamin Gilmer expressed both relief and anxiety as they await Gilmer’s release, given his current state of health. Gilmer is in the terminal stage of his illness, confined to a wheelchair and facing severe cognitive and physical decline. The hope is that the hospital setting will provide him with more dignified treatment and allow for regular visits from his family.

Benjamin Gilmer’s efforts to advocate for Vince Gilmer began after joining the family medicine clinic where Gilmer used to work. Despite the heinous crime for which he was convicted, Gilmer was described as a beloved and dedicated clinician who cared deeply for his patients. Benjamin Gilmer’s quest to reconcile Gilmer’s reputation with his crime was documented by journalist Sarah Koenig on an episode of “This American Life” titled “Dr. Gilmer and Mr. Hyde.”

The story of Vince Gilmer’s case, from his conviction for the murder of his father to the discovery of his Huntington’s disease diagnosis, has captivated many. Efforts to secure his release from prison have involved numerous advocates, including North Carolina lawmakers and medical professionals. Gilmer’s impending release is seen as a bittersweet moment, given the gravity of his illness and the long road to securing his freedom. If all goes according to plan, Gilmer will finally have the opportunity to receive proper medical care and spend time with his loved ones outside of prison.
