Former President of the Balearic Islands, Francesc Antich, has passed away at the age of 66 in Mallorca due to cancer. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, the socialist leader served two terms as head of the island’s government: first from 1999 to 2003, and then from 2007 to 2011. In between these periods, he served as a deputy in the Congress, and from June 2011 to 2016, after losing the regional elections, he held a seat as a regional senator, as well as in another period between May and September 2019. His last public position was as president of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, which he had to leave due to his illness which he fought against in the last years.
The president of the Congress and secretary general of the socialists in the islands, Francina Armengol, expressed her sorrow at the passing of Antich. She described him as “one of the greats. To me, my teacher, my friend, and my lighthouse,” in a post on social media. She continued, “There are moments when words cannot express the feelings or the pain. Xisco Antich is a reference in life, he is a life lesson and a love for our country. My tribute will be to always be loyal to what he taught me and continue fighting for the socialist ideals we have always shared. I love you infinitely, Xisco,” published Armengol in Mallorcan.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, also expressed his condolences to Antich’s family, calling him a “great companion and reference.” He acknowledged Antich’s work in opening paths of progress and dialogue in the Balearic Islands and all of Spain, teaching them to govern without fear of the future. Sánchez wrote, “His departure leaves a great void. A strong embrace to his family and loved ones.” The Balearic Government has called an extraordinary council on Friday to establish the days of mourning in the islands. Subsequently, President Marga Prohens will speak, highlighting Antich’s “affable and always close approach” before offering her condolences “in moments of deep sadness.”
Francesc Antich will be remembered as a key figure in the political landscape of the Balearic Islands, having served in various positions of power and leadership within the socialist party. His legacy of dedication to his country, his party, and his ideals will continue to inspire and guide those who knew him. The outpouring of condolences and tributes from fellow politicians and citizens alike is a testament to the impact he had on the lives of many. As the Balearic Islands mourn his passing, they also celebrate his life and the contributions he made to the community.
The passing of Francesc Antich marks the end of an era in the Balearic Islands, leaving a void in the political arena and in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the policies he advocated for during his time in office. As the community comes together to mourn his loss, they also reflect on the lessons he imparted and the values he stood for. Francesc Antich will be remembered not only as a politician, but as a mentor, friend, and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
