Emergency officials in Florida are urging residents to have a plan and an emergency kit ready before Hurricane Milton strikes. With forecasts predicting a storm surge higher than 10 feet, evacuation orders could be crucial for saving lives. Residents are advised to make a plan, have an emergency kit, and stay informed to ensure their safety during the hurricane.

Preparing for a hurricane includes getting necessary supplies in advance, such as nonperishable foods and water. Residents should also ensure they have enough medical items and medications stocked up in case of an emergency. Checking with local or state emergency management departments for preparedness checklists is recommended to ensure that all necessary steps are taken before the hurricane hits.

Emergency managers emphasize the importance of having a sufficient emergency kit with at least seven days of supplies, including food, water, medications, batteries, and other essentials. It is also advised to have important documents such as birth certificates and Social Security cards in a go-bag in case of evacuation. Pet owners are reminded to include items for their animals in their emergency kits and to never leave their pets behind during an evacuation.

Residents should familiarize themselves with how to turn off water, gas, and electricity in their homes, as well as keep necessary tools near the shut-off valves. Those with electric cars are urged to park them in elevated locations or away from storm areas to avoid flood damage. Florida’s Hillsborough County offers guidance for electric vehicle owners to minimize fire risks during hurricanes.

Evacuation orders may be issued for certain areas, especially for those in low-lying or flood-prone regions. It is important to follow instructions from local emergency management officials and know which evacuation zone you live in. Residents can find preparation guides and information on disaster planning on their local or state emergency management websites, as well as on the Florida Division of Emergency Management’s website.

As Hurricane Milton threatens Florida’s Gulf coast with storm surge, high winds, inland flooding, and tornadoes, being prepared and following evacuation orders could be crucial for residents’ safety. It is essential to have a plan, an emergency kit, and stay informed to ensure readiness for any potential impact from the hurricane. Officials urge Floridians to take proactive measures to protect themselves, their families, and their pets during this dangerous weather event.
