Florida teenagers caught on viral video dumping trash into ocean from a boat surrender to authorities

Two Florida teens, a 15-year-old from Gulf Stream and a 16-year-old from Boynton Beach, face a felony pollution charge after a viral video showed them dumping trash into the Atlantic Ocean from a boat. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $50,000 fine if convicted. Officials, including FWC chairman Rodney Barreto, have condemned the actions of the teens, stating that a disregard for Florida’s environment will not be tolerated. The incident occurred during the annual Boca Bash, and the video footage shows both teens dumping trash bins full of garbage into the ocean.

The video, posted on YouTube by content creator Wavy Boats, shows the driver of the boat, the 15-year-old, tossing garbage into the ocean, including plastic water bottles, cans, food bags, plastic cups, and other items. The footage also shows the 16-year-old dumping contents of a trash bin into the ocean. The pollutants were scattered across the surface of the ocean, dispersed by rough waves and wind. Following the incident, an investigator with the FWC visited the home of the boat’s registered owner, who identified himself as the 15-year-old’s father and stated that they were in the process of retaining legal counsel. The FWC also spoke to multiple witnesses on the boat who identified the suspects.

The teens have turned themselves into authorities, but it is not clear if they have retained legal representation. While NBC News does not generally name minors charged with crimes, the FWC has confirmed that the suspects are facing charges of causing pollution to harm human health or welfare, animal, plant, or aquatic life or property. The 16-year-old’s father also stated that they were seeking legal counsel. The actions of the teens have sparked outrage, with Boca Bash organizers posting a statement on Facebook to clarify that the incident was not representative of the event. The FWC has emphasized the importance of protecting Florida’s natural resources and holding those responsible for damaging the environment accountable.

The charge of causing pollution is considered a third-degree felony and carries significant legal consequences if convicted. The teens could potentially face up to five years in prison and a $50,000 fine, highlighting the severity of their actions. The incident has raised awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and the need to prevent pollution in order to protect Florida’s precious natural resources. The video footage of the teens dumping trash into the ocean serves as a reminder of the impact of irresponsible behavior on the environment and the consequences of not respecting and preserving marine ecosystems. It is crucial for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and make efforts to safeguard the environment for future generations.
