Stephan Sterns, a Florida man, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s teenage daughter, 13-year-old Madeline Soto. Soto was found dead on March 1, and it is alleged that Sterns killed her between February 25 and 27. Kissimmee Police Chief Betty Holland stated that evidence suggests Sterns disposed of Soto’s belongings and placed her body in a wooded area before she was reported missing. Sterns was initially taken into custody on unrelated charges of sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material and was later charged with multiple counts of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation involving children.

While Sterns is currently the only person charged in Soto’s case, the investigation remains active, according to Will Jay, the Homicide Unit chief for the State Attorney’s Office for the 9th Judicial Circuit. When Soto’s mother went to pick her up later that day, she learned that Soto never made it inside the school.

Sterns currently remains in the Osceola County Jail without bond.
