Florida fisherman attacked by sharks after accidentally falling into water at Bahamas marina

Marlin Wakeman, a 24-year-old man from Florida, recently fell off a fishing boat at a marina in the Bahamas and was attacked by a shark. Despite the traumatic experience, Wakeman expressed his intention to return to the Bahamas and the water as soon as possible, stating that while he may have some nightmares, he will ultimately be all right. The incident occurred at the Flying Fish Marina on April 26 while Wakeman was trying to jump onto the boat he was working on. He explained that around 20 sharks often swim around the marina due to the discarded fish carcasses.

As Wakeman attempted to jump onto the boat, he slipped and fell into the shark-infested waters. He was bitten on the leg by what he identified as a Caribbean reef shark, with another shark attacking his shoulder before he could get out of the water. The boat’s captain quickly applied a tourniquet to Wakeman’s leg before he was taken to a clinic. He was later transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he underwent surgery performed by Dr. Robert Borrego. Dr. Borrego determined that the shark had punctured Wakeman’s kneecap and narrowly missed an artery, estimating the shark’s size to be approximately seven feet based on the bite mark.

Following the surgery, Dr. Borrego expressed confidence in Wakeman’s recovery, stating that he expects him to make a full recovery. Despite the harrowing incident, Wakeman appeared resilient during a news conference held at the medical center, mentioning that he may experience some nightmares but will ultimately be fine. He explained that the incident has not deterred him from returning to the Bahamas and the water, displaying a level of determination and bravery.

The presence of numerous sharks in the marina due to the discarded fish carcasses highlights the potential risks that individuals working in such environments may face. While Wakeman was unfortunate to have been attacked, his ability to remain calm and composed during the ordeal, as well as his positive outlook on his recovery, serve as an inspiration in the face of adversity. The support and swift actions of those around him, including the boat’s captain and medical professionals, played a crucial role in ensuring that Wakeman received timely medical attention and care.

Wakeman’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the importance of being prepared for emergencies, especially in environments where such risks are heightened. His resilience and determination to return to the water despite the traumatic experience showcase a remarkable spirit of courage and perseverance. The successful outcome of Wakeman’s surgery and the optimistic prognosis from Dr. Borrego offer hope and reassurance that he will be able to recover fully from the physical and emotional trauma caused by the shark attack.
