David Knezevich, a Florida businessman, has been indicted for the murder of his estranged wife, Ana Hedao Knezevich, who disappeared from her apartment in Spain over nine months ago. The 40-year-old woman went missing from her Madrid apartment on February 2 after a man in a motorcycle helmet was seen entering her building and covering a security camera lens with spray paint. The man, believed to be David Knezevich, was then seen wheeling out a suitcase. Knezevich has denied killing his wife but is facing charges that could result in the death penalty.

Knezevich was already facing kidnapping charges related to the disappearance of Ana, with whom he was going through a contentious divorce. His lawyer, Jayne Weintraub, has described the new charges as a “desperate attempt by the government to charge everything possible and see what sticks.” The new charges against Knezevich include kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death, and foreign murder of a US national. Prosecutors allege that Knezevich flew from Miami to Turkey before reaching Serbia and driving 1,600 miles to Spain in the days leading up to his wife’s disappearance.

The day Ana went missing, Knezevich was reportedly seen buying duct tape and the same spray paint that was used on the security camera. The couple had been married for 13 years and were in the midst of a divorce proceeding in which they were disputing millions of dollars in property. The day after Ana vanished, her loved ones received a message claiming she had met a man, a Colombian-American citizen, with whom she wanted to travel after an instant connection. However, her friends and family were alarmed by the message as it did not sound like it was written by a native Spanish speaker, prompting one friend to call the Spanish police.

Knezevich, who ran a tech consulting company with his wife, has been in jail after pleading not guilty to the initial kidnapping charge. Despite the mounting evidence against him, he continues to deny the allegations of murder. The victim’s body has yet to be found, further complicating the investigation. The case has raised questions about the circumstances leading up to Ana’s disappearance and the possible motives behind her murder. Prosecutors are pushing for the death penalty for Knezevich if he is convicted of the charges against him, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations and the potential consequences he may face.
