The opening date for Sydney’s new metro line is still uncertain as Fire and Rescue NSW reviews extra information from Sydney Metro and waits for final approval from the rail safety regulator. More than 60 outstanding issues need to be resolved before passenger services can begin. The private operator of the line faced criticism for its response to a system-wide outage that halted 31 driverless trains three weeks ago.

Transport for NSW secretary Josh Murray stated that intense meetings were being held to ensure the metro line was ready for operation. While the broader transport network, operator, trains, and stations are prepared, the agency is focused on ensuring that all necessary information has been thoroughly reviewed. A training exercise for firefighters at Barangaroo station is the final step before paperwork is submitted to the national rail safety regulator for scrutiny. While a date in August was previously targeted for the opening, Murray emphasized the importance of safety assurance and asked for patience as the process continues.

Although there are contingency plans in place, the agency is waiting for advice from the national rail safety regulator before moving forward with the opening of the metro line. The government has stated that they will not pressure anyone to give sign-offs until they are confident in the safety of the system. The fire and rescue agency recently met with Sydney Metro and the line’s private operator to address outstanding issues and ensure that all necessary steps are taken before passenger services can commence. The review and acceptance of additional information from Sydney Metro are key factors in determining the new opening date.

The private operator faced criticism from Fire and Rescue NSW commanders for their response to the system-wide outage that occurred on the metro line, which caused 31 driverless trains to come to a sudden halt. The agency is working diligently to address these concerns and ensure that all necessary safety measures are in place before allowing passenger services to begin. The training exercise for firefighters at Barangaroo station is considered the final piece of the practice puzzle before submitting paperwork to the national rail safety regulator for approval.

Despite initial plans for an August opening date, the agency is prioritizing safety assurance and thorough review of all information before setting a new date. While the broader transport network, operator, trains, and stations are ready for operation, the agency is taking the necessary steps to ensure that all parties involved have had the opportunity to review the latest information. It is essential to have the approval of the national rail safety regulator before progressing with the opening of the metro line. Contingency plans are in place, but patience is requested as the agency awaits further advice and feedback from the regulator.
