Fifteen dead in Bosnia following severe flooding caused by heavy rainstorm

Heavy flooding and landslides in Bosnia and Herzegovina have caused widespread devastation, with at least 15 people reported dead. The severe rainstorm overnight resulted in entire sections of roads and railways connecting the capital Sarajevo with Mostar and the Adriatic Sea being swept away or blocked by debris. The flooding has made many areas inaccessible, with reports of villages and towns completely submerged underwater. Aerial drone footage shows the extent of the damage caused by muddy torrents and landslides, with many people still missing and injured.

Authorities in Bosnia have called in the army and local volunteers to help with rescue operations. Bosnia’s Defence Minister Zukan Helez stated that troops have been engaged in rescue and recovery missions to save people trapped in houses affected by landslides. Most of the reported deaths occurred in Jablanica, with other affected areas including Konjic, Kreševo, and Buturović polje. The town of Fojnica near Kiseljak also experienced casualties. The Jablanica fire station reported that the town was completely inaccessible due to the destruction of roads and train lines.

The devastating floods and landslides have led to significant damage to infrastructure, including the sweeping away of a busy road and railway line linking Sarajevo to Mostar and the Adriatic coast. The civic protection service has reported that many people are endangered, with victims, injured individuals, and missing persons being reported. Reports also indicate that surging waters have swept away domestic animals and cars, while floodwaters have filled up the lower floors of buildings. People have been urged to stay on upper floors of their homes and avoid flooded streets for their safety.

In neighbouring Croatia, heavy rains and strong winds have led to road closures and preparations for potential flooding in the capital of Zagreb as the Sava River swells. Montenegro, Bosnia’s southeastern neighbour, has also experienced torrential rains, resulting in the isolation of some villages and flooding of roads and homes. The severe weather conditions in the region have caused widespread destruction and loss of life, prompting urgent rescue efforts and calls for assistance. The full extent of the damage caused by the flooding and landslides in Bosnia and beyond is still being assessed, as rescue operations continue and authorities work to provide support to affected areas.
