FEMA leader assures that the entire federal government will step up to respond to Hurricane Milton despite staff shortages

FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell discussed the agency’s approach to staffing and resources as Hurricane Milton approached Florida shortly after Hurricane Helene. Criswell emphasized that FEMA is just one part of the federal government’s support mechanism and brings in the entire federal family to assist states affected by the storms. Despite concerns about limited resources due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Criswell explained that FEMA has a layered approach to staffing and repurposes employees from non-critical offices to support disaster response efforts.

Hurricane Milton is anticipated to make landfall as a Category 4 storm, nearing Category 5 status, with Florida’s central west coast in its path. Criswell urged people to heed local officials’ warnings and evacuate if necessary to ensure their safety. She emphasized the severity of the approaching storm, stating that it will be like nothing residents have seen before. For those unable to evacuate, Criswell advised them to listen to local authorities, charge all devices, and call 911 if immediate assistance is required. She assured that additional teams would be deployed to support search and rescue operations after the storm passes.

Regarding FEMA’s resources, Criswell acknowledged that the federal response to Hurricane Milton would present challenges, but emphasized that the agency has planned and handled similar situations before. She mentioned that less than 10% of FEMA’s resources would be available for immediate disaster management response but reassured that the agency has other employees ready for deployment. Criswell highlighted the importance of preparing for the storm and collaborating with various federal and state agencies to ensure an effective disaster response.

As Hurricane Milton approached Florida, Criswell underscored the need for coordination and cooperation between FEMA, local officials, and residents to mitigate the storm’s impact. She emphasized the significance of proactive measures, such as evacuation, to prevent casualties and advised residents to stay informed and follow instructions from authorities. Criswell’s message focused on enhancing community resilience, preparedness, and response efforts in the face of severe weather events like Hurricane Milton. She stressed the importance of staying safe and working together to navigate the challenges posed by the impending storm.
