Fear for our lives: Tow truck driver shares harrowing near-death experience on N.S. highway

Tow truck operator Jason Beaton narrowly avoided being struck by a car while responding to a crash on a busy Nova Scotia highway. Beaton believes that drivers who do not follow Slow Down, Move Over legislation when passing emergency responders could have deadly consequences. He emphasizes the importance of being aware of the dangers of the job and always staying alert. Beaton’s quick thinking and awareness saved him from injury when another vehicle lost control just 10 minutes after he arrived at the scene.

In accordance with provincial law, drivers are required to slow down to 60 km/h or the posted speed limit when passing emergency vehicles with their lights flashing. They must also move into another lane if the road has two or more lanes going in the same direction to provide space for emergency vehicles. While the law originally only applied to emergency vehicles like police and ambulances, it was later expanded to include tow trucks. Beaton’s colleague, Andrew Peterson, stresses the importance of people recognizing that tow trucks are covered by the same legislation in order to ensure the safety of roadside workers.

The incident on the highway served as a personal reminder for Peterson, as he knew RCMP Const. Francis (Frank) Deschenes who lost his life in a 2017 crash in New Brunswick while on duty. Peterson highlights the need for drivers to respect the flashing yellow lights on tow trucks just as they do with red and blue lights on emergency vehicles. Despite the driver who struck Beaton’s tow truck not being fined under the Slow Down, Move Over law, the incident serves as a sobering reminder for everyone to be mindful of emergency personnel on highways.

Beaton stresses the fear that tow truck operators face every time they have to respond to a call on the highway. The damaged tow truck at the scene with the words “slow down, move over, it’s the law” serves as a visual reminder for drivers to be cautious and adhere to the legislation. Beaton speaks out about the incident because he wants to ensure that all roadside workers return home safely to their families. His message serves as a call to action for drivers to be attentive and considerate when encountering emergency personnel on the roads.

Jason Beaton’s experience on the highway underscores the risks that tow truck operators face while responding to incidents. Despite the dangers, Beaton and his colleagues continue to provide essential services on the roadways. The incident also highlights the importance of Slow Down, Move Over legislation in protecting those who work on the roadside. As the law includes tow trucks, it is crucial for drivers to be aware and comply with the regulations to prevent tragic accidents. Beaton’s story serves as a reminder for everyone to prioritize safety and vigilance when sharing the road with emergency responders.
