Florida Atlantic University has hired Baylor associate head coach John Jakus as its new coach following Dusty May’s departure to Michigan. Jakus and the school have agreed on a five-year contract, and financial terms were not immediately released. Jakus brings extensive coaching experience, having been at Baylor under Scott Drew for seven seasons, including their national championship season in 2021. He also spent time at Gonzaga as director of operations. With a combined record of 316-99 in his 12 seasons on Division I staffs, Jakus is seen as a strong addition to the FAU program.

FAU athletic director Brian White believes Jakus will enhance and build on the momentum of the program. White emphasized Jakus’s coaching pedigree, having learned from top coaches in the game. Jakus is known for his tireless work ethic, care for his players, and understanding of the current landscape in college athletics. His coaching experience includes serving as a head coach in Europe and working with Athletes in Action. With FAU coming off a successful two-year stretch of 60 wins, including a Final Four appearance, Jakus is seen as the right fit to continue the program’s success.

The Owls lost in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament to Northwestern and soon after, May left for Michigan, signing a lucrative five-year contract. May’s departure opened the door for Jakus to take over the program. FAU has been one of the best teams in the nation over the last two years, with 60 wins, rivaling top programs like Houston, UConn, and Purdue. With Jakus now at the helm, the school is looking to continue its success and build on the foundation that May and his staff had established.

Jakus expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the FAU program and acknowledged the success that May and his staff had achieved. FAU planned to hold an introductory news conference to welcome Jakus as the new coach. With his coaching experience, international expertise, and winning track record, Jakus is poised to continue the tradition of success at FAU. As the Owls look to maintain their competitive edge in the NCAA, Jakus’s leadership will be crucial in guiding the team to future achievements on the court.
