Tennis fans from all over the world gathered at Roland Garros on Monday to witness Rafael Nadal’s only French Open match of the year, which may potentially be his last ever. Despite his loss to Alexander Zverev, fans were there to honor Nadal’s incredible career and catch a final glimpse of his greatness at the tournament. For many fans, Nadal is more than just a tennis player; he serves as an inspiration for never giving up and fighting until the end.

One dedicated fan, Fiona Li, who has been supporting Nadal since 2005, made sure to visit the 3-meter-tall statue of Nadal at the tournament grounds. Along with her friends, they posed in front of the statue, donning red T-shirts with letters spelling out “Rafa” and shouting, “Vamos, Rafa!” Nadal, who turns 38 in June, had hinted at retirement in 2024 but has not confirmed it, leaving fans hopeful for a return to the court. The atmosphere at Roland Garros resembled Serena Williams’ farewell at the U.S. Open in 2022, where fans celebrated her legacy.

Many fans seized the opportunity to show support for Nadal, either by visiting the Nadal-branded merchandise section or taking photos at the statue. One fan, Julio Parada, who prefers Roger Federer but admires Nadal’s rivalry with him, wanted to witness Nadal’s potential final French Open in person. Barbra Chambati and her daughter Crystal traveled long hours from New Zealand to see Nadal play, and despite missing his training session, they were grateful for his years of dedication to the sport.

Cathy Davis, a retiree from Toronto and a self-proclaimed “Rafa supreme fan,” praised Nadal’s shot-making abilities and intensity on the court, as well as his humility off the court. Fans like Davis and Li were prepared to support Nadal throughout the tournament, regardless of how far he progressed. The uncertainty surrounding Nadal’s future only added to the anticipation and emotional investment of fans who were eager to witness a potential final chapter in the tennis legend’s career. With Nadal’s legacy at Roland Garros as the King of Clay, fans cherished the opportunity to be part of his journey.
