Grizzly bear 399, a well-known ambassador for her species, was tragically killed in a highway collision in Wyoming. She was 28 years old, and had a yearling cub with her at the time of the accident. The cub’s whereabouts are currently unknown, but there is no evidence to suggest that it was injured. The driver involved in the collision was unharmed. The incident highlights the dangers that vehicles pose to wildlife, as 49 grizzly bears have died in similar collisions between 2009 and 2023.

Grizzly bears typically live to be around 25 years old, with some individuals in the wild surviving up to 35 years. Grizzly bear 399 was a beloved figure, known for her intelligence, beauty, and behavior. She had several offspring, including three sets of triplets, and was last seen in 2020 with four cubs. Due to her unique characteristics, she gained a following from people around the world, including wildlife photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen. She was the oldest known reproducing female grizzly bear in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem at the time of her death.

Grizzly bear 399’s identity was confirmed through ear tags and a microchip, highlighting the efforts of researchers to track and monitor the bear population. Grizzly bears in the United States have faced significant population declines, with only 700 to 800 individuals estimated to remain in the lower 48 states by 1975. After being listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the population has shown signs of recovery, with at least 1,923 grizzly bears now living in the contiguous states. Efforts to protect and conserve these iconic animals continue to be a priority for wildlife agencies.

The loss of grizzly bear 399 serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats that wildlife face, including habitat destruction, human-wildlife conflict, and vehicle collisions. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the long-term survival of grizzly bears and other vulnerable species. Public awareness and support for wildlife conservation initiatives are essential to address these challenges and protect biodiversity. The legacy of grizzly bear 399 will live on through her offspring and the impact she had on those who admired and followed her journey.

The tragic death of grizzly bear 399 has sparked mourning among her fans and supporters, who appreciated her role as an ambassador for grizzly bears and wildlife conservation. Her story highlights the complex relationship between humans and wildlife, and the importance of coexisting with and respecting the natural world. As efforts to protect and restore grizzly bear populations continue, it is essential for individuals and communities to value and prioritize the preservation of biodiversity and the habitats that sustain these iconic animals. Grizzly bear 399’s legacy will endure as a symbol of resilience, adaptability, and the interconnectedness of all living beings.
