A.J. Smith, the successful general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers, passed away at the age of 75 after a long battle with prostate cancer. Known for his tough and no-nonsense persona, Smith was also loved by his family and had a deep passion for football and the Chargers. He played a key role in one of the greatest chapters in the franchise’s history, leading the team to 98 wins from 2003 to 2012. Chargers owner Dean Spanos expressed his condolences to Smith’s family and praised his dedication and intensity that elevated the organization.

Starting as a part-time scout for the Chargers, Smith worked his way up to become the general manager in 2003. One of his most notable moves was in the 2004 NFL Draft when he selected Eli Manning first overall despite Manning’s request not to be chosen by the Chargers. Smith then orchestrated a trade with the New York Giants to acquire Philip Rivers, who became the best quarterback in team history. Smith also drafted key players like Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding, as well as signing Antonio Gates as an undrafted free agent in 2003. Gates went on to set numerous franchise records for the Chargers.

In 2007, Smith made the decision to hire Norv Turner as head coach, replacing Marty Schottenheimer. Despite Turner’s success with a 56-40 record, the team did not win a Super Bowl under his leadership. Ultimately, both Turner and Smith were fired in 2012 after a disappointing 7-9 season, marking only the second losing season for Smith during his tenure as GM. Smith’s son, Kyle, has followed in his father’s footsteps and currently serves as the assistant GM for the Atlanta Falcons. Smith is survived by his wife, daughter, son, son-in-law, and three grandchildren.

Smith’s legacy with the Chargers will be remembered for his contributions to the team’s success during his time as general manager. He was instrumental in building a strong roster and making strategic decisions that shaped the franchise’s history. Despite facing challenges and criticism, Smith’s dedicated work ethic and passion for the game left a lasting impact on the organization. His family, colleagues, and fans mourn his loss and remember his accomplishments with reverence and gratitude.

The passing of A.J. Smith marks the end of an era for the Chargers and the NFL community. His impact on the team’s success and the players he drafted will be felt for years to come. As a respected figure in the league, Smith’s dedication, integrity, and determination have left a lasting legacy that will be remembered by those who knew him. The outpouring of support and condolences from fans and colleagues is a testament to the impact Smith had on the Chargers and the NFL as a whole. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.
