Germany is a top tourist destination with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes. In 2023, over 183 million tourists visited the country. From the natural beauty of Bavaria to the urban streets of Berlin, Germany has something to offer every traveler. Before traveling to Germany, it is essential to know the visa requirements, which vary depending on the traveler’s country of origin. While US citizens only need a passport valid for more than three months, visitors from other countries may need to apply for a tourist visa for short trips.

Neuschwanstein Castle, located in the Alps in Bavaria, is Germany’s most visited castle, attracting 1.3 million visitors annually. Built in the 19th century by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, this fairytale-like castle has been likened to the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. It is recommended to purchase tickets for a guided tour online in advance as they tend to sell out quickly. The Berlin Wall, a symbol of the Cold War era, is still standing as a reminder of Berlin’s divided past. The East Side Gallery, adorned with artwork by more than 100 artists, is the longest remaining section of the wall and is now the world’s longest open-air art gallery.

The Brandenburg Gate, located in the heart of Berlin, is a well-known landmark representing Berlin’s division and reunification during the Cold War. Inspired by the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, the monument stands more than 80 feet tall. Cologne Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic-style cathedrals in the world, attracts around 20,000 visitors daily in Cologne. Construction of the cathedral began in 1248 and took over seven centuries to complete. When visiting the cathedral, travelers should only bring small bags and be prepared for identity checks.

Oktoberfest, the world’s largest Volksfest held annually in Munich, attracts over 6 million visitors each year. The event features a beer festival, carnival, music, parades, and more. It is advisable to arrive early to avoid large crowds and to drink responsibly. Europa-Park, Germany’s largest theme park, caters to thrill-seekers with 100 attractions, 14 roller coasters, 17 European and three fantasy-themed areas, six hotels, and over 50 themed restaurants and bars. Located in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, Europa-Park is a popular destination for families and visitors looking for an adrenaline rush.
