Experts warn against using ice on sunburn as UK experiences mini heatwave

With the UK seeing its first mini heatwave of the year, many are experiencing sunburn and need to take care of their skin properly. To ease discomfort and prevent further damage, it is important to follow certain guidelines. Experts advise against using ice directly on sunburnt skin as it can worsen the condition by narrowing blood vessels and cutting off blood supply to damaged skin. Instead, a cold compress using ice water is advised. Additionally, it is recommended to refrain from using petroleum jelly, popping blisters, scratching burns, or wearing tight-fitting clothes.

The NHS suggests several ways to ease sunburn symptoms, including taking a cool shower or bath, applying a damp towel to the skin, taking painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen, applying aftersun cream, and covering burnt skin from direct sunlight until fully healed. If symptoms such as blistering, swelling, high temperature, shivering, headache, muscle cramps, nausea, or dizziness occur, seek medical attention promptly. To prevent sunburn, it is best to avoid sun exposure during peak hours, wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses, and seek shade when outdoors.

It is crucial to recognize the signs of heatstroke and know how to cool someone down in case of emergency. Using ice directly on the skin to cool down is not recommended, as it can cause more harm. If heat exhaustion or heatstroke is suspected, it is important to seek medical help immediately. Prevention is key when it comes to sunburn, and taking necessary precautions like staying out of the sun during peak hours, covering up, and seeking shade are essential to avoid skin damage. Following these guidelines can help protect your skin and prevent sunburn-related complications.

For those looking for ways to stay cool during hot weather, handheld fans can be a convenient and effective solution. By keeping yourself cool and hydrated, you can reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses like sunburn and heatstroke. Always be mindful of your body’s signals and take necessary steps to prevent overheating. By staying informed about sun safety and following expert advice on sunburn care, you can enjoy the sunshine without putting your health at risk. Remember to prioritize your well-being and take proactive measures to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
