Ex-Colorado player criticizes Deion Sanders’ football program, citing concerns about playing for publicity.

Cormani McClain, a five-star recruit who enrolled at Colorado last year, has decided to leave Deion Sanders’ program and has made some critical remarks in the process. McClain, the top-ranked cornerback in his high school class, announced his decision to enter the transfer portal in search of a new collegiate home. In a video titled “Next Step” posted on YouTube, McClain expressed his desire to be part of a leading program that will develop players and help him reach his full potential. He mentioned wanting to change the narrative surrounding his name and be a part of a program that will have a positive impact on his development.

Sanders responded to McClain’s departure by expressing his desire for the young player to find a program that will challenge him, hold him accountable, and help him grow as a young man. The NFL Hall of Famer acknowledged that Colorado was not able to provide what McClain was looking for in terms of development and encouraged him to seek out opportunities elsewhere. Sanders hinted that McClain may not have given his best effort during his time in the program, citing his statistics from the previous season as evidence. McClain recorded 13 tackles and two passes defended in nine games, suggesting a lack of impactful contributions.

Despite a strong start to the season, Colorado’s performance took a dip as they struggled to maintain their early momentum, finishing last in the Pac-12 conference. The Buffaloes were initially in the headlines for defeating a ranked opponent and starting the season 3-0, but their success was short-lived. The team’s struggles were further highlighted by the high number of players entering the transfer portal, with 26 individuals leaving the program by the spring window. Although Sanders has been able to bring in new talent through the transfer portal, losing a highly ranked player like McClain is a significant loss for the team.

As Colorado prepares to transition to the Big 12 conference following the dissolution of the Pac-12, the loss of players like McClain presents a challenge for the program. Sanders’ focus on developing young players and building a successful program may require adjustments to address the turnover in the roster. The impact of McClain’s departure and the ongoing changes within the team reflect the competitive nature of collegiate sports and the need for programs to adapt to evolving circumstances. Sanders remains committed to supporting his players and helping them succeed, even as the team faces challenges and adjustments in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics.
