Even seemingly insignificant misogyny poses a threat to women’s safety

In Australia, there is a prevalent culture of misogyny that perpetuates violence against women. This culture is rooted in the belief that a man’s feelings are more important than a woman’s body, leading to acts of violence that are rational within the context of everyday misogyny. These acts represent the ultimate result of society’s insistence that women exist solely for the benefit of men. Men are urged to reflect on their own everyday expressions of misogyny, even if they may not be directly responsible for acts of violence against women.

It is important for men to question their own attitudes and behaviors towards women, as they may unknowingly perpetuate harmful stereotypes and beliefs. Reflecting on one’s own expectations of women, such as expecting them to take on more caregiving responsibilities or subjugating their lives to men, can help to dismantle the culture of misogyny that contributes to violence against women. Men need to recognize the ways in which they may contribute to this culture and take responsibility for their actions.

Every week in Australia, a woman is killed in a violent act often by someone who claimed to love her. This violence is not a tragic or senseless occurrence, but a result of a culture that devalues women and treats them as expendable. While legal and political changes are necessary, men also need to confront their own attitudes towards women and take proactive steps to challenge the misogyny that surrounds them. Women need men to be allies in the fight against gender-based violence.

There are signs that attitudes towards women are beginning to shift, with movements such as She Is Not Your Rehab emerging to encourage men to take responsibility for their own healing and to challenge harmful beliefs and behaviors. Recent court judgments and public reactions to cases of gender-based violence also suggest a changing tide in the way society views and treats women. Men are being called upon to be aware of their actions and to actively work towards creating a safer and more equitable world for women.

Even small acts of misogyny, such as expecting women to apologize more or making inappropriate comments, contribute to a culture in which women are seen as less deserving of respect and safety. However, acts of kindness and recognition of women’s humanity, such as yielding space on a narrow path, can help to counteract this culture of misogyny and promote a more inclusive and safe society. It is essential for individuals, particularly men, to be conscious of their behavior and to actively challenge harmful stereotypes and attitudes towards women.
