Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay made a triumphant return to Parliament in London for the first time after surviving a potentially lethal sepsis infection. Doctors were able to save his life, but had to amputate both his hands and feet. The South Thanet MP from Kent was welcomed with a standing ovation and thanked Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for visiting him multiple times in the hospital without publicizing his visits. Mackinlay joked about “breaking too many rules” by causing loud applause, not wearing a jacket, and entering with sneakers on.

Mackinlay also recalled the shock he felt upon waking up from a medically induced coma and seeing that his limbs had turned completely black. He described them as being like “plastic…. black, shrivelled”. The doctors were able to save his limbs above the elbows and knees, and he now uses prosthetics, jokingly referring to himself as the first “bionic MP”. Mackinlay, a former member of UKIP, was elected in 2015 after defeating Nigel Farage in the South Thanet constituency.

The MP expressed gratitude for the support he received during his difficult ordeal, and highlighted the importance of raising awareness about sepsis. Mackinlay emphasized the need for quick recognition and treatment of the condition to prevent further cases like his own. He also encouraged people to appreciate the health care professionals who worked tirelessly to save his life and provide him with the necessary care.

Despite the challenges he faced, Mackinlay remains positive and determined to continue his work as an MP. He has returned to his parliamentary duties with a renewed perspective on life and a sense of gratitude for the second chance he has been given. The MP’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity serve as an inspiration to many, and his story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment.

In his speech to Parliament, Mackinlay reflected on the impact of his experience and the lessons he has learned from battling sepsis. He stressed the importance of cherishing loved ones, appreciating the small moments in life, and living each day to the fullest. The MP’s message of resilience, gratitude, and hope resonated with many in the chamber, serving as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Mackinlay’s return to Parliament marked a significant milestone in his recovery journey and inspired others to remain positive and hopeful in the face of challenges.
