SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is calling for a new investigation into the scandal of child abuse by grooming gangs in the United Kingdom, backing calls for King Charles III to intervene. The U.K. has been dealing with grooming gangs for years, with perpetrators often of South Asian or British Pakistani heritage exploiting children in cities like Rochdale, Telford, Manchester, and Rotherham. A 2014 report on grooming in Rotherham found that around 1,400 children were abused between 1997 and 2013, with ongoing abuse still occurring today.
The report revealed horrific details of children being raped, trafficked, abducted, threatened with violence, and intimidated by multiple perpetrators. It also found that authorities failed to act and suppressed reports of abuse. A review in Telford and a broader Home Office report in 2020 found that the abuse cases mainly involved men of Pakistani ethnicity but noted that group-based child sex exploitation offenders are most commonly White. The scandal highlighted concerns about prioritizing multiculturalism and political correctness over child welfare.
The issue reemerged recently when local politicians in Oldham requested a government inquiry into child abuse. Despite concerns about far-right exploitation, a report found children were failed by local agencies but also stated there was no cover-up involved. Health Secretary Wes Streeting responded to Musk’s comments by emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing child abuse seriously and stating that inquiries should be led locally. Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch called for a national inquiry to hold those in authority accountable for their role in the scandal.
Musk backed calls for King Charles III to intervene in the issue, pointing out that current Prime Minister Keir Starmer was the head of the Crown Prosecution Service during the scandals, although the scandals generally involved local authorities. Streeting welcomed the opportunity to work with Musk to address child abuse, acknowledging the importance of Musk’s social media platform in raising awareness and tackling such serious issues. The British government’s Home Office has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter. Musk’s involvement and support for an inquiry underscore the ongoing need to address the devastating impact of grooming gangs on children in the UK.
