Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has long been a proponent of self-driving vehicles. He has stated multiple times that Tesla’s robotaxi will be one of the company’s most important products. However, despite these promises, actual fully autonomous cars have yet to be produced by Tesla.
Musk recently announced on a Friday afternoon that Tesla would unveil its robotaxi on August 8th. This announcement was made with no details or specifics, just a simple post on social media.
Tesla’s goal is to create a car without controls for a human to use and to offer a fully autonomous taxi service through software updates. Musk has claimed that these autonomous cars would be able to earn money for their owners by giving rides on their own.
While Tesla has passed some of Musk’s predictions for the development of self-driving technology, some experts have tested the system and found that it is still far from being able to drive on its own without human intervention.
Currently, Tesla offers Full Self-Driving capability as an add-on feature for new cars. It can be purchased for an additional $12,000 or on a subscription basis for up to $199 a month. However, the system still requires active driver supervision and is not capable of full autonomy at this time.
