In the aftermath of earthquakes centered in Pazarcık and Elbistan, inspections across the city identified 16 collapsed, 7 urgently to be demolished, and 56 severely damaged schools. Efforts are underway to rebuild the schools that have been demolished and cleared of debris, with 262 classrooms in 28 schools slated to be ready for the upcoming academic year. As the strengthened schools are completed, they are beginning to accept students once again.

Provincial Director of National Education, Ali Tosun, explained that work has begun and is ongoing at schools damaged by the earthquakes. Tosun announced that 44 schools have been put back into operation so far. He emphasized the collaborative efforts between the state and the people to heal all wounds, especially those in educational institutions. The students will have the opportunity to resume classes in their own desks. Today, the opening of Esentepe Anatolian High School is taking place. In total, 32 schools underwent strengthening efforts, with the third one being put into service today. A total of 44 schools, comprising 375 classrooms, have resumed educational activities. By the end of the year, they hope to reach 62 operational schools.

Tosun also expressed the belief that normalizing education is crucial for the city’s overall recovery. He stated that 1,700 students are returning to regular classes as of today, and that they believe the city cannot return to normalcy without the normalization of education. Tosun expressed hope that all schools will have fully transitioned to regular education by the end of the year, ensuring that they will have a better physical infrastructure than many other cities.

A student at Esentepe Anatolian High School, İlhan Tekne, shared his happiness at returning to his classroom after having to attend classes at different schools due to earthquake damage. Another student, Eylül Alıcı, also expressed her joy at being able to return to their school. The students’ comments reflect the relief and gratitude felt by many students at the prospect of resuming their education in their familiar schools. As the reconstruction and strengthening efforts continue, the community is hopeful for a full restoration and an improved educational environment in the near future.
