Dwyane Wade discusses Team USA’s Olympic potential and transitioning to broadcasting

Dwyane Wade has been in France for the Paris Games but has spent only one night in Paris itself. He is calling Olympic men’s basketball for NBC, with the games taking place in Lille before moving to Paris for the knockout stage. Wade is fully immersed in broadcaster mode, traveling with the team and staying with them to stay connected. Having played for and against many of the current Olympians during his NBA career and being part of the 2008 gold medal-winning team in Beijing, Wade believes the current U.S. men’s basketball team may be one of the best ever assembled in the sport due to their depth.

Wade has called the first two group games for the U.S. men’s basketball team, which have resulted in decisive wins against Serbia and South Sudan. While established players like LeBron James and Kevin Durant have continued to excel, coach Steve Kerr has had to make tough decisions with the roster due to the abundance of talent. Wade emphasizes the importance of players staying ready for their chance to make a difference when their time comes. He reflects on his experience in 2008, highlighting the shared goal of winning the gold medal as the ultimate focus rather than individual achievements.

Despite being rivals with some players he competed with in 2008, including LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Kobe Bryant, Wade cherished the opportunity to play alongside such talents. He emphasizes the camaraderie that develops among players, helping to overcome the natural competitiveness among them. Wade has been impressed by teams like Canada and France in the current Olympic competition, noting that in a single-game format, even powerhouse teams like the U.S. can be challenged by opponents on any given night. He acknowledges the need for Team USA to bring their A-game consistently.

Wade’s enthusiasm and joy for the game have translated well into his broadcasting role, earning positive reviews for his commentary alongside Noah Eagle. The two have developed a strong partnership, with Wade feeling supported and comfortable on the call. Following his recent experience with NBC, Wade is open to the idea of returning to television in a permanent analyst role. He acknowledges the need to find the right situation that aligns with his beliefs and values, emphasizing the importance of working with the right partner and being compensated fairly. Wade’s natural excitement and authenticity in the broadcasting role have resonated with viewers and raised the possibility of a long-term partnership with NBC when they begin airing the NBA in the future.
