During a tense practice, Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin engages in physical altercation with teammate

Fights are a common occurrence in the NHL, but a recent altercation between teammates Rasmus Dahlin and Peyton Krebs at a Buffalo Sabres practice has garnered attention. The fight reportedly began after Krebs accidentally hit Dahlin with a high stick during team drills. Dahlin responded by attempting a hip check on Krebs, leading to a physical altercation in which the two teammates had to be separated by their teammates. The incident was captured on video and went viral on social media.

After the altercation, Dahlin expressed regret for his actions, stating that “stuff happens out there,” and he apologized to Krebs. Krebs, for his part, downplayed the incident, stating that he was driving to the net and accidentally hit Dahlin in the face. Head coach Lindy Ruff emphasized that competitive practices are essential for the team’s development and that occasional emotional outbursts are to be expected in a sport as intense as hockey.

The Sabres had a slow start to the 2024 season, losing in their overseas trip to Prague against the New Jersey Devils and falling to the Los Angeles Kings in their home opener. However, they secured their first win of the season against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. The team’s struggles on the ice may have contributed to heightened tensions during practice, leading to the altercation between Dahlin and Krebs.

Ruff acknowledged that fights among teammates can occur in a high-aggression sport like hockey and stated that it was a sign of healthy competition. He emphasized the importance of maintaining intense practices to push the team to perform at their best. The Sabres will need to work through any lingering tension from the altercation and focus on improving their performance on the ice to achieve success in the season.

The incident between Dahlin and Krebs is a reminder of the physicality and intensity that characterize NHL games and practices. While fights between teammates are rare, they can occur in the heat of the moment. It is crucial for players to resolve conflicts professionally and move forward as a team. The Sabres will need to address any underlying issues stemming from the altercation and work together to achieve their goals for the season.
