During a conference, Blinken reassures Black Sea allies of US support as Ukraine calls for military assistance.

During the Second Black Sea Security Conference in Sofia, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured allies in the region that they could depend on the support of the United States to make the Black Sea region more secure, prosperous, and integrated. Blinken emphasized the importance of investing in the region’s security to ensure peace and freedom across Europe, especially in light of Russia’s illegal annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014. President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine further underscored the need for support for Ukraine to defend itself and stand on its feet.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stressed the importance of essential military support for Ukraine, including artillery, ammunition, and air defense systems, to strengthen the country’s capacity against Russian aggression. Kuleba emphasized that increasing the capabilities of Ukrainian air defense would not only protect Ukraine but also enhance regional and global stability by safeguarding the security of Ukraine’s neighbors and the entire Black Sea region. Kuleba highlighted the need for a strong show of force to deter Russian aggression, as Moscow only respects strength and perceives any other approach as weakness.

Kuleba’s call for the Black Sea to become a sea of NATO, peace, and stability reflected a broader goal of reducing Russia’s malign influence in the region. NATO, celebrating its 75th anniversary, is considering a plan to provide more predictable, longer-term military support to Ukraine while confronting Russia’s demands for acknowledgement of its control over Crimea and recognition of the annexation of Ukrainian provinces. Ukraine has firmly rejected these demands, and the conference aimed to strengthen security in the Black Sea region through collaboration among countries like Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine.

The cooperation between the Bulgarian and Ukrainian foreign and defense ministries, along with Ukraine’s Centre for Defence Strategies, highlights a coordinated effort to address security challenges in the Black Sea region. The conference serves as a platform for discussions and strategies to mitigate Russia’s influence and enhance stability in the region. Kuleba’s plea for support in strengthening Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression underscores the urgent need for solidarity among allies in the Black Sea region to counter threats to peace and security.

Blinken’s emphasis on the United States’ commitment to supporting allies in the Black Sea region aligns with broader efforts to promote stability and prosperity in Europe. The ongoing conflict involving Russia and Ukraine has raised concerns about regional security, necessitating a collective response to address threats in the Black Sea. By reaffirming support for Ukraine and promoting cooperation among Black Sea countries, the conference aims to build a united front against Russian aggression and safeguard the peace and stability of the region.
