Dubai Airports CEO Assures Hub is Fully Operational Despite 1,200 Cancellations

Since an immense flash flood grounded the city of Dubai, over 1,200 flights have been canceled and 40 diverted at Dubai International Airport. Despite the challenges, CEO Paul Griffiths reassures that the hub is “100% operational,” with a focus on returning to normal flight schedules. The airport is currently prioritizing departing flights to reduce overcrowding in terminals and ease pressures on the system. Passengers have been advised to arrive no earlier than two hours before their departure time to help manage congestion at the airport.

Emirates and Flydubai have reopened check-ins, but Terminal 3 remains congested as travelers deal with cancelations and delays. Emirates has also suspended check-in for customers with connecting flights through Dubai until a specific date and time. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for confirmation before heading to Terminal 3 to avoid unnecessary crowding in the check-in areas. The airport is working to restore operations and manage the high volume of passengers displaced by the flood.

The UAE experienced the worst rainfall in 75 years, causing widespread flooding and disruptions in Dubai. Social media has been flooded with images and videos showing the impact of the flood, including submerged aircraft at DXB and cars navigating through waterlogged streets. Griffiths criticized the misleading information circulating on social media and urged passengers to rely on the airport’s official communications for accurate updates. One of the main challenges reported by passengers is difficulty in getting in touch with airlines for information regarding their flights.

Dubai Airport has put out numerous communications to provide travelers with the “source of truth” regarding the situation at the airport. The emphasis is on managing the high volume of passengers, getting flights back to normal, and ensuring a smooth departure process for travelers. The airport’s CEO acknowledges the unprecedented nature of the situation, expressing that they have never seen anything like it before. Despite the challenges posed by the flash flood, Dubai International Airport remains focused on restoring operations and ensuring the safety and well-being of its passengers.

Passengers are advised to follow updates from the airport and their airlines to stay informed about any changes to their flights. With Dubai International Airport facing congestion and disruptions, it is crucial for travelers to only come to the airport if their airline has confirmed the departure of their flight. By adhering to these guidelines and timelines, passengers can help reduce overcrowding and congestion at the airport, allowing for a smoother travel experience for all. The airport is working tirelessly to navigate through the aftermath of the flood and return to normalcy as soon as possible.
