Drag queen at Olympic opening ceremony stands by performance, dubs it ‘a snapshot of France in 2024’

As a gay youth in central France, Hugo Bardin, also known as the drag queen Paloma, never felt he belonged in a world that represented who he was. That is why he felt it was important to participate in the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, which showcased a diverse, multiethnic France. The ceremony included a scene with Paloma and other drag artists, which drew criticism from some, including US presidential candidate Donald Trump who called it a disgrace. Despite the backlash, Paloma is proud to have been a part of a show that broke away from French stereotypes and showcased France in 2024.

Paloma, who gained fame after winning “Drag Race France,” has received both positive and negative messages following the ceremony. While the performer has chosen not to take legal action against online harassment, she has filed a complaint over the abuse received by DJ Barbara Butch, who wore a halo-like headdress during the scene. Paris police have launched an investigation into the matter. Despite the negative feedback, Paloma remains focused on the loving messages she has received and the importance of representing marginalized communities in mainstream events.

Many praised the Paris Olympics opening ceremony for its creativity, style, and inclusivity. However, some, including French Catholic bishops, felt offended by the scene that depicted a gathering resembling “The Last Supper.” Organizers clarified that there was no intention of disrespect towards any religious group and that the aim was to celebrate community tolerance. Trump’s comments on the scene sparked further controversy, with Paloma expressing that if he was not reacting, then they had not done their job.

Paloma believes that the backlash against the scene has been fueled by hate rather than genuine religious concerns. She emphasizes the importance of representing marginalized groups and claiming their place in the world. The drag queen persona, inspired by Spanish films, was debuted by Bardin five years ago, and the focus remains on promoting beauty, reunion, and reparation. Despite the negative reactions, Paloma hopes that people can change their perspective and see the beauty in their performance rather than focusing on offense.

In a phone interview and at her Paris workshop, Paloma shared her thoughts on the controversy surrounding the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Despite regrets over people’s reactions, Paloma stands by the performance and its message of beauty and inclusivity. The drag artist encourages viewers to shift their perspective and appreciate the creativity and representation showcased in the ceremony. The controversy surrounding the scene highlights ongoing discussions about LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream events and the importance of tolerance and acceptance. The Paris Olympics organizers maintain that the intention was to celebrate diversity and community rather than offend any religious groups.
