Dozens of asylum-seekers are currently living near Seattle with an empty motel nearby.

A group of asylum-seekers in Kent, Washington, are facing uncertainty as they camp in tents next to a vacant motel, wondering if they will be arrested for trespassing. Kabongo Kambila Ringo, a 29-year-old from Congo, expressed the difficulties they are facing, including a lack of food and proper sanitation. The encampment in Kent underscores the challenges faced by communities far from the U.S.-Mexico border as President Joe Biden attempts to address asylum and immigration issues ahead of the fall election.

Migrants from Congo, Angola, and Venezuela have sought shelter at various locations in the Seattle area, including a suburban church that has provided assistance to over 2,000 asylum-seekers since 2022. The church has accommodated hundreds of migrants each night and raised funds to place families in motels. However, as resources have dwindled, some migrants have been evicted from temporary accommodations, leading them to set up camp in Kent outside an unused Econo Lodge purchased by the county.

Efforts to pressure local officials to open the motel for migrants have faced challenges, with legal restrictions on the property limiting its use to quarantine housing. While authorities have provided some funding for migrant assistance, long-term solutions are still needed to address the growing influx of asylum-seekers in the region. The state of Washington is expected to allocate additional funds to support recently arrived migrants, but the availability of these resources may not be immediate.

Despite the challenges, volunteers and organizations continue to provide support to the asylum-seekers in Kent, offering food, toiletries, and other necessities. Families with young children are among those struggling to find stable housing and access to basic amenities. As the community navigates the complex issues surrounding immigration and asylum, residents like Linda Gutiérrez and Jose Guerrero share their stories of hardship and hope for better living conditions.

The situation in Kent highlights the broader humanitarian crisis facing migrants seeking asylum in the United States and the strain it places on local communities. As the debate over immigration policy continues, individuals and organizations are working to address the immediate needs of asylum-seekers while advocating for more sustainable solutions. The fate of those living in the tent encampment in Kent remains uncertain, as they await decisions from local officials and support from various aid organizations.
