Bursa Uludağ University Faculty of Architecture 2nd year student Karakaş was seriously injured on April 12th while riding a motorcycle driven by Ziya Ö. (20) on the Yalova-Bursa highway when they collided with a car.
Karakaş was taken to Yalova Training and Research Hospital for treatment, where he suffered brain death 5 days after the accident.
It was understood that the young student had pledged to donate his organs 3 days before the accident, and with the approval of his family, the transplant process was initiated.
The student’s heart, which was removed during surgery, will be transferred by air to a 15-year-old patient in Ankara.
The kidneys were sent by road to two patients in Bursa, and the liver will be transferred to a patient in Çanakkale.
Yalova Provincial Health Director Specialist Dr. Osman Karakuş told reporters that they experienced the pain of losing a daughter like an angel on the 3rd day of Eid al-Fitr due to a traffic accident.
Karakuş stated that, as a result of brain death and the sensitivity of the family, the heart, liver, and kidneys of the young person were removed, and offered condolences to Melek Karakaş’s family.
“Let our sister Melek be an example to everyone.”
Romanian-born mother Viorica Cristina Karakaş mentioned that her daughter had prepared breakfast for her before the accident.
Karakaş continued describing the dialogue that took place between them, saying: “During breakfast, she said ‘I did something, mother.’ I asked, ‘What did you do, my dear?’ She said, ‘I donated my organs.’ ‘Why did you do that, it’s a very beautiful thing but isn’t it too early?’ I replied. My morale was greatly affected, I had an inexplicable feeling. Later, I went to work because I had to, but that feeling stayed with me. Since it was forbidden to talk on the phone at my workplace, I was calling during breaks. I called because of that feeling, to see what she was doing. I even heard the sound of an ambulance at my workplace. How could I have known that it was for my daughter?”
The grieving mother demanded the arrest of the motorcycle driver Ziya Ö, who was a friend of her daughter and the cause of the accident, claiming that he was at fault.
Karakaş’s sister-in-law Furkan Kaya mentioned that they saw the occurrence of the accident and the lack of damage to the organs as the will of God.
Kaya described how the motorcycle hit the car on the right side, causing Karakaş to be thrown approximately 35 meters away, resulting in only brain damage. He emphasized that all the organs for donation were intact and were puzzled. He stressed that this was God’s will. He encouraged others to follow Melek’s example and donate their organs, suggesting that she had become an angel who will bring life to others.
Karakaş’s sisters Adile Karakaş and Sibel Kaya also expressed their wish for the motorcycle driver to receive the punishment he deserved.
