Sabrina Carpenter’s hit song Espresso was named the biggest song of 2024 by BBC Radio 1, after spending five weeks at number one on the UK charts. The station compiled a list of the top 100 tracks of the year based on chart success, audience engagement, and cultural relevance. Other songs that made it to the top 100 include Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em, Chase & Status and Stormzy’s Backbone, and Jade Thirlwall’s Angel of my Dreams.

In addition to Sabrina Carpenter, other artists from Radio 1’s prestigious ‘Sound of’ list also made an appearance in the countdown. Charli XCX, with her song 360, and Chappell Roan with Good Luck, Babe! placed second and third on the list. The countdown also featured UK artists such as The Last Dinner Party, Olivia Dean, and Elmiene, showcasing the dominance of British talent in the music industry.

Espresso has garnered over a billion streams on Spotify and reached number one on the Billboard Global 200. The song’s music video, directed by Dave Meyers, quickly gained global popularity, solidifying Sabrina Carpenter’s status as a chart-topper. Charli XCX, who appeared multiple times on the list, was noted for her contributions to the UK music scene, along with other British artists who featured prominently in the top 100 tracks.

Aside from Espresso, Sabrina Carpenter also had success with her song Please Please Please, which is the second single from her sixth album, Short n’ Sweet. She is currently on tour in support of the album. Chappell Roan, who placed third with her song Good Luck, Babe!, is up for several Grammy awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. The top 10 songs of 2024 also featured hits from Billie Eilish, Beyoncé, and Hozier.

The special Radio 1’s Biggest Songs of 2024 countdown was hosted by Vick Hope, Matt Edmondson, Jeremiah Asiamah, and Katie Thistleton. The list highlighted the best tracks of the year based on a variety of criteria, offering listeners a snapshot of the music that resonated with audiences throughout 2024. With a focus on chart success and cultural impact, the top 100 tracks showcased the diversity of talent in the music industry and celebrated the achievements of both established artists and up-and-coming musicians.

Overall, Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso emerged as the standout song of 2024, earning recognition for its popularity and success across various platforms. The influence of British artists, such as Charli XCX and Chappell Roan, was also prominently featured in the countdown, underscoring the UK’s contribution to the global music landscape. As listeners reflect on the top songs of the year, the countdown serves as a tribute to the artists who defined the sound of 2024 and left a lasting impact on the music industry.
