A queso cheese product called “Queso de Mano PAISA” is being recalled by Tama Corporation due to contamination with the potentially deadly bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was initiated after laboratory analysis revealed the presence of the bacterium in the 24-ounce containers of the product. The affected product has a lot number of 2420104 and a best by date of May 16, 2024, and was distributed only to Rancho Market stores in Utah. Despite the contamination, no illnesses have been reported in connection with consuming the product as of the recall announcement made on April 26.

In response to the discovery of Listeria contamination, Tama Corporation has taken immediate action to ensure the safety of consumers. The company has stated its commitment to rigorous quality controls from its product suppliers and has worked with the FDA and USDA to address the situation. Tama Corporation has also reached out to the supermarket chain involved to halt sales of the affected product and account for all items from the contaminated vat. Consumers, clients, and distributors have been reassured that all necessary steps have been taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis in humans, a potentially life-threatening illness. The bacterium can be found in various environments, including soil, water, decaying vegetation, and animals, as well as surviving under refrigerated conditions. Listeriosis poses a greater risk to vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Pregnant women are also at risk, as the infection can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, and serious health complications in unborn babies who acquire the infection.

Symptoms of Listeria infection typically manifest within hours to days after exposure and can vary in severity. Mild cases may present with symptoms like fever, tiredness, nausea, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, individuals may experience severe headaches, neck stiffness, loss of balance, confusion, and convulsions. Anyone with suspected Listeria infection, especially those in high-risk groups, should seek medical attention promptly. Past outbreaks of listeriosis in the United States have been linked to various food sources, including raw milk and cheese, ice cream, vegetables, poultry, sausages, deli meats, and seafood.

Newsweek is dedicated to challenging conventional wisdom and fostering connections in the pursuit of shared knowledge. The recall of the contaminated queso cheese product serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety measures, quality control standards, and prompt action in response to potential health risks. By following guidelines from regulatory agencies like the FDA and maintaining vigilance in food handling and production processes, companies can help safeguard the health and well-being of consumers. It is essential for individuals to stay informed about food recalls and take appropriate precautions to mitigate the risk of foodborne illnesses.
