Diana Taurasi, a WNBA veteran with a 20-year career, is contemplating her basketball future. Throughout her time in the league, she has achieved three championships, two WNBA Finals MVP trophies, and 11 All-Star appearances. Taurasi also won three NCAA Division I titles with the UConn Huskies. Despite her impressive resume, she has yet to announce whether she will return for another season. Taurasi emphasized the seriousness of the decision, stating that once she announces her retirement, she will mean it. She is currently in discussion with her wife, Penny Taylor, and the Phoenix Mercury, her team for her entire WNBA career.

After the Phoenix Mercury’s elimination from the playoffs in late September, Taurasi has been reflecting on her future in the league. She admitted to thinking about retirement every day and is taking her time to make the right decision. Taurasi expressed that she wants to analyze the team’s potential for a championship, especially with the additions made last offseason, such as Natasha Cloud and Kahleah Copper. The Mercury also recently unveiled a state-of-the-art training center worth $100 million, featuring basketball courts named after Taurasi. She values the relationships she has built with her teammates and is considering all aspects of the previous season before making her decision.

While Taurasi is uncertain about her return as a player, she is already contemplating possibilities for her post-playing career. She expressed interest in potentially getting involved with team ownership, citing the influence an owner can have on a city and a team. Taurasi mentioned being inspired by the impact that Phoenix Mercury owner Mat Ishbia has had on the team and the city. She sees the potential for female athletes to take on influential roles within sports organizations, beyond their playing careers. Taurasi views ownership as the next step in her career and is intrigued by the idea of shaping the future of a team.

As a future Hall of Famer, Taurasi’s decision to retire will undoubtedly have an impact on the basketball world. Her legacy as one of the greatest players of her generation is secure, but her next steps will also be closely watched. Taurasi’s contributions to the game, both on and off the court, have been significant, and her potential involvement in team ownership could pave the way for more female athletes to take on similar roles. Whether she decides to continue playing or pursue a new path, Taurasi’s influence on the sport and her commitment to excellence will continue to inspire fans and future generations of basketball players.
