Detroit bans gas stations from locking customers inside following fatal shooting incident

The city of Detroit is implementing measures to ban gas stations from locking people inside the store after a fatal shooting incident. The Detroit City Council approved an ordinance that would make it illegal for employees to remotely lock the door of businesses protected by glass. The goal is to prevent threats from entering convenience stores, gas stations, liquor stores, or party stores. This decision comes after a violent altercation in May 2023 at a gas station where an employee locked the door, resulting in three people being shot and one fatality.

The incident in May 2023 occurred when Samuel McCray became upset over a failed electronic purchase at a gas station. McCray argued with the clerk and insisted on leaving with the items, and when more people entered the store, the clerk decided to lock the door, trapping them inside. This led to a violent confrontation, resulting in three people being shot, one of whom died. McCray is facing charges of murder and attempted murder, while the clerk, Al-Hassan Aiyash, is charged with involuntary manslaughter. The cases are still pending, and the judge noted that if the door had not been locked, the violence may not have occurred.

The decision to ban gas stations from locking people inside is aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. Council member James Tate emphasized the importance of keeping threats outside the store and ensuring the safety of both employees and customers. The ordinance will apply to businesses where workers are protected by glass, such as gas stations and convenience stores. This measure reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing public safety and addressing the risks associated with locking individuals inside enclosed spaces during disputes.

The fatal shooting incident highlighted the dangers of locking people inside gas stations and other businesses during confrontations. Judge Kenneth King remarked that if the door had not been locked, the violence may have been avoided. Aiyash’s attorney stated that he was unaware that McCray had a gun when he made the decision to lock the door. The tragedy has sparked a conversation about the responsibility of businesses to ensure the safety of employees and customers, leading to the implementation of the new ordinance in Detroit to prevent future violence and protect individuals from harm.

Moving forward, the city will enforce the ban on gas stations locking people inside, with penalties for businesses that violate the ordinance. The measure is part of a broader effort to enhance public safety and reduce the risk of violent incidents in commercial establishments. The Detroit City Council’s decision reflects a commitment to proactive measures to prevent tragedies like the fatal shooting that occurred in May 2023. By addressing the issue of locking individuals inside businesses during disputes, the city aims to create a safer environment for residents and visitors, promoting a sense of security and well-being in the community.
