Despite growing frustration from progressives and unrest on campuses, the White House remains steadfast in its support for Israel

President Joe Biden visited Virginia on Earth Day, joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders, where the two discussed clean energy proposals. Sanders also expressed concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged Biden to condition funding to Israel as leverage. Progressive protests over the crisis in Gaza have intensified on college campuses, leading to clashes and concerns about antisemitism. Despite the pressure, Biden and his administration remain steadfast in their support for Israel and have not altered their stance.

The protests on college campuses, particularly at Columbia University, have escalated, prompting actions such as transitioning classes to hybrid mode and discussions about addressing antisemitism. Republican Speaker Mike Johnson visited Columbia University and called for action from the Biden administration to protect Jewish students. Biden has faced criticism, but has maintained his pro-Palestinian stance, while also acknowledging the right of protestors to voice their dissent. However, threats targeting Jewish students have been a cause for alarm among senior advisers.

Recent polling indicates that a small percentage of young voters disapprove of Biden’s handling of the Middle East situation, with the economy being their top concern. Biden recently signed an aid package granting additional military funding to Israel, despite dissatisfaction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in the conflict. The White House must certify Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian laws by May 8, with potential consequences if Israel does not meet the requirements.

During a phone call with Netanyahu, Biden warned of potential changes to US support if Israel did not allow more humanitarian assistance into Gaza. The administration is considering options such as slowing military provisions, reducing monetary assistance, or increasing public pressure on Netanyahu. Sanders sought assurances from Biden on how he was addressing the situation but found the president to be diplomatic in his response. Progressives are questioning the lack of accountability in the administration’s approach to the crisis.

The protests and growing unrest on college campuses have raised challenges for Biden, who signed an aid package for Israel while facing criticism for the handling of the conflict. The situation remains complex, with tensions escalating and calls for action to protect Jewish students. The administration is monitoring the situation closely and weighing potential responses if Israel does not comply with international laws. Despite the pressure from progressives and the public, Biden has not wavered from his support for Israel, maintaining a diplomatic approach to the crisis.
