Deputy Kathleen Hicks to assume control while Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin undergoes nonsurgical procedure

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had a scheduled, elective, and minimally invasive nonsurgical procedure at Walter Reed Medical Center to address a bladder issue unrelated to his earlier cancer diagnosis. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks assumed his duties during the procedure, and Austin resumed his responsibilities later that evening. Both the White House and Congress were notified of the situation, and Austin’s temporary absence was planned for in advance.

In the past, Austin faced criticism for his lack of transparency when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December and had to undergo surgeries without immediately informing the White House or the public. This lack of communication led to calls for his resignation, including from former President Trump, who accused Austin of improper conduct. In response to the controversy, the White House created new guidelines for cabinet officials to follow when they are unable to perform their duties and must delegate authority to someone else.

Despite the criticism, Austin maintained the trust of President Biden, who stood by his defense secretary. Austin himself acknowledged his error in failing to communicate his cancer diagnosis promptly, apologizing to his colleagues and the American public for his lack of transparency. Following his cancer treatment, Austin experienced a bladder issue unrelated to his cancer prognosis, which required additional medical attention in February. This latest procedure was part of his ongoing care and did not affect his cancer recovery.

The Pentagon emphasized that Austin’s current health issues were separate from his earlier cancer diagnosis and were not expected to impact his overall prognosis. Notifications were promptly sent to the White House and Congress to keep them informed of the situation as it unfolded. Despite the challenges he has faced with his health, Austin has continued to fulfill his duties as Defense Secretary, with Deputy Secretary Hicks stepping in when necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the Department of Defense.

Moving forward, Austin’s medical procedures and recovery will be closely monitored, with updates provided as needed. The Pentagon is committed to maintaining transparency and communication about Austin’s health status to prevent any further misunderstandings or concerns about his ability to carry out his responsibilities. As Austin navigates his health challenges, he remains dedicated to serving his country and fulfilling his duties as Defense Secretary to the best of his ability.
