Newsom’s efforts to “Trump-proof” California’s laws have been met with criticism from Trump himself, who accused the governor of hindering efforts to make California great. In Illinois, Governor JB Pritzker also expressed a commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of his state’s residents. Efforts to secure Illinois from federal actions have been ongoing, including codifying abortion rights and environmental regulations. While Democratic governors in deep-blue states like California, New York, and Massachusetts are taking a proactive approach to counter Trump’s policies, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized unity and working together after Trump’s victory. In a split Legislature in Pennsylvania, plans to counter Trump may prove more challenging given the state’s political landscape. Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey pledged to resist Trump on issues that go against the state’s values while also seeking opportunities for compromise. These governors are demonstrating their commitment to protecting their states’ residents and policies against potential federal actions from the Trump administration.
